Berdychiv, which would become in the following century one of the largest Jewish cities in Europe, is still a seigneurial market town when the Haïdamaks reach it. The community is attacked.
The attack does not halt its growth: the city is a hub of fairs, and fairs bring merchants back. This is one of the ambiguities of such towns — useful enough to be rebuilt after each destruction, exposed enough to be destroyed again.
