Repeated pogroms by troops who succeed one another in the city
1919·Berdychiv
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Berdychiv endures repeated pogroms at the hands of the successive troops passing through the city.
The city was one of the most Jewish in Europe by proportion, and one of the centers of Ukrainian Hasidism. It changes hands throughout the entire year, and each passage leaves its mark. The accumulation, more than any isolated episode, explains why the community never recovered what it had been: it is not a massacre that destroys it, but repetition.
