From the thirtieth day of June to the second day of July, the Jewish men of Loutsk are gathered at Lubart Castle, a medieval fortress at the heart of the city, then shot by the Einsatzkommando.
Loutsk is one of the first great massacres of the invasion of the Soviet Union. The pretext is the discovery of the bodies of prisoners executed by the NKVD before its retreat — a pretext that the Germans employ systematically in the first weeks, in Volhynia as in Galicia, to transform a planned massacre into apparently spontaneous reprisals.
