Jews remaining in the city are confined in three ghettos then shot.
Gomel is one of the great Jewish cities of eastern Belarus. After the occupation, the German military administration established not one but three enclosed quarters there, separated across the city and its suburbs, allowing the process to proceed in stages without raising the alarm.
The shootings took place over the course of the autumn, in the immediate vicinity of Gomel. Part of the Jewish population had been evacuated into the interior of the country before the front arrived, which accounts for the gap between the pre-war census figures and the number of victims.
