Zolochiv (Złoczów in Polish) possessed an important Jewish community since the 16th century, engaged in regional commerce and crafts. In July 1941, during the German advance, the city was the scene of a deadly pogrom followed by systematic massacres, before the deportation of survivors to Bełżec in 1942.
