The Jews of Jēkabpils and Krustpils, the two cities facing each other across the Daugava, are rounded up in the first weeks of occupation and shot in nearby woods by German units and by the Latvian auxiliary guard.
At Jēkabpils, on the Daugava, the community is confined to a few houses along the riverbank during the first weeks of the occupation, then led in groups toward a nearby pine forest. The executions are carried out by a German commando unit supported by Latvian auxiliaries from the region, following the pattern applied at that time in all the small towns of the country, where communities were annihilated even before the ghettos of the larger cities had been organized.
