The Shoah (1939–1945)
Massacre of Rēzekne
Juil.-août 1941·Rēzekne
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The community of the capital of Latgale is shot in waves at the Ančupāni hills, at the edge of the city, by local auxiliaries led by the security police.
Rēzekne, in Latgale, was home to one of the great Jewish communities of eastern Latvia. From the very first weeks of the occupation, the men were shot in the surrounding woods; the women and children, held in a barracks then led to the Ančupāni quarries, were murdered over the course of the summer. The quarry pits are the memorial site of the community.
