The Shoah (1939–1945)
Massacre of Telšiai
Juil.-août 1941·Telšiai
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The Jewish men of the city are shot in the Rainiai woods; the women and children, penned in the Geruliai camp, are killed at the end of summer. A handful of young girls spared for work will be shot on the shore of Lake Masčio.
Telšiai was a renowned center of learning, home to a great yeshiva. Jewish men from the town and the surrounding region were gathered at the Rainiai camp from the very beginning of the occupation and shot in groups; the women and children, held at Geruliai, were murdered at the end of summer. A few young girls escaped the massacre and were hidden on farms in the surrounding area.
