Rēzekne (Rezhitse in Yiddish), the main city of Latgale, was home to a significant Jewish community that represented a substantial share of its population in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the German occupation of July 1941, nearly all the city's Jews were murdered by the Einsatzgruppen and their Latvian auxiliaries in the weeks that followed.
