The city on the Save lost its community within months: shops confiscated, men sent to forced labor, families rounded up and handed over to Ustaše camps.

Slavonski Brod, a river port on the Sava and a crossing point into Bosnia, was home to a prosperous Jewish community that held a significant share of the timber trade and industry. The newly established Ustasha state struck it with racial decrees in the very first weeks: dispossession, exclusion from the professions, marking. The men were first conscripted for forced labor, then arrested; the families were rounded up afterward, in several waves, and transported to camps opened upstream along the Sava, a few dozen kilometers from the city. Almost none of those deported ever returned. Slavonski Brod ceased to have an organized Jewish community.
