A town in Podolia where deportees from Bukovina are crowded together with the local Jewish population, Sharhorod experiences a typhus epidemic during the very first winter, which the deported doctors fight with whatever means are at hand. A mutual aid organization distributes the scarce available food there, and the town is among the rare places in the region where a notable proportion of those imprisoned survive until liberation.
