During the Muscovite and Cossack invasion, the Jewish quarter of Lublin was pillaged and the community massacred.
Lublin was the seat of the Council of Four Lands, the assembly that governed the Judaism of the Republic, and one of the most prestigious centers of learning in Europe: its yeshiva had trained generations of masters. Its destruction, in the midst of the "Deluge" that ravaged Poland for a decade, marks the end of the golden age of Polish Judaism.
