The Jewish quarter of Kraków was attacked and burned during the Black Death, despite the protection of King Casimir III.

The King of Poland had confirmed and extended the privileges granted to Jews by Boleslas the Pious in the previous century, and he had the perpetrators prosecuted. This policy led Poland to receive, in the following decades, a large share of the Jews expelled from Germany: it is from this moment that the formation of the greatest Judaism in Europe dates.
