Pogrom

A rumor of a Christian child abduction spreads through the Kazimierz quarter of Cracow. The crowd gathers in front of the Kupa synagogue, forces the doors, burns the Torah scrolls and pursues Jews through the streets; militiamen and soldiers take part in the assault or stand by, and wounded people are beaten again in the hospital. A woman who survived a camp is killed.

Many of the survivors who had returned to Cracow were housed in communal lodgings, visible and easily identified. The pogrom is the first major urban episode of postwar Poland; it precedes by a year that of Kielce and gives the signal for departures.
