On June 11 and 12, 1945, in Rzeszów, Poland, the discovery of a young girl's body gave rise to accusations of ritual murder against survivors who had returned to the city. A crowd gathered, the militia searched the community building and arrested the Jewish residents, escorting them to the police station before forcing them to leave the city.
The pogrom was the first in a series that struck Polish survivors in the year following liberation, culminating in Kielce. It prompted the reborn community of Rzeszów to disperse: those who had returned to search for their loved ones set off again toward Wrocław, toward the occupation zones in Germany, and beyond.
