The ghetto, handed over a few days earlier to the Red Cross, is reached by the Red Army; it is then crowded with evacuees from the eastern camps and struck by a typhus epidemic that lasts for weeks.

Theresienstadt is reached in the spring, after receiving in the final weeks evacuation convoys from the eastern camps, which bring typhus with them. The Red Cross takes charge of the ghetto a few days before the arrival of the Red Army. The Czech survivors return home to find their homes occupied and their families gone. The place will become the central memorial of the Shoah on Czech soil.
