The band of crusaders led by Volkmar, who had already struck Prague despite the opposition of Bishop Cosmas, massacred the community of Wesseli in Bohemia before crossing into Hungary. There it was destroyed shortly afterward by the troops of King Coloman.
The violence in Bohemia extends eastward from that of the Rhineland and follows the same logic: contingents without leaders or provisions pay themselves at the expense of the communities they encounter. Duke Bretislav II completed the ruin of what remained by confiscating the property of those who wished to leave the country.
