The fortress city receives convoys from Bohemia, Moravia, the Reich and Austria; overcrowding, hunger and disease cause elderly residents to die there in large numbers, while the neighboring Small Fortress serves as Gestapo prison.
The Theresienstadt ghetto, established in a fortified garrison town north of Prague, fills up over the course of the year. Jews from the Protectorate are sent there, along with elderly people from Germany and Austria who have been led to believe they are moving to a residence. Density, hunger, and disease kill without any further need; the ghetto also serves as a sorting station toward the extermination centers in the east. Theresienstadt is also the place where courses and concerts continue, clandestinely.
