The Mauthausen camp and its Gusen annexes were reached by American troops; the survivors had received in the last weeks evacuees from the eastern camps.
The Mauthausen camp, one of the last to remain in the hands of the regime, is liberated at the beginning of May. The liberators find survivors there in an extreme state, along with detainees from nearby annexes evacuated in the final weeks. Many Jews from Hungary and Poland had been brought there on foot or in open wagons during the preceding winter.
