Thousands of detainees evacuated from Neuengamme are crammed onto three ships, sunk by British aviation which believes them to be carrying troops.

In the final days of the war, the prisoners of the Neuengamme camp were evacuated toward the Baltic coast and packed onto three ships anchored in the bay of Lübeck, including the ocean liner *Cap Arcona*, without food or any possibility of going ashore.

On the third of May, the British air force attacked the ships, believing them to be carrying fleeing troops: the vessels burned and sank, and many of those who reached the shore were shot. It was one of the heaviest losses at sea of the war, and it struck prisoners on the eve of their liberation.
