Henri II expelled from Mayence the Jewish community, the oldest and most learned in the Rhineland. The order was reversed after a few months and the exiles returned, but the ordeal left a lasting wound.

Gershom ben Juda, whom his contemporaries called the Light of the Exile, lost his son there, baptized by force during the persecution and dead before he could return to Judaism. The father mourned him as one mourns the dead, and the question of how to receive forcibly converted Jews who return was settled by his decisions: they are welcomed without being shamed.
