Early Middle Ages and Crusades

Massacre of Cologne refugees hidden in the Ruhr village

Juin 1096·Eller

Toll

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The village of Eller, on the Ruhr, was among the townships where the Archbishop of Cologne had distributed the Jews of his city. The crusaders reached it as they did the others and massacred the refugees there.

The Hebrew chronicles give for Eller, as for each of the refuges, the list of the dead and the details of their end; it is from these lists that the Memorbücher of the Rhineland are made, read in the synagogue on the Sabbath preceding the Jewish Pentecost. The names have outlasted the places: several of these townships never had Jews again.
