Kerpen, in the land between Cologne and Aix, was among the refuges of the Cologne community. The crusaders reached it in their turn and killed those who were there.

The destruction of the Rhineland communities during the summer of the First Crusade was not the work of the regular army that departed later, but of the popular bands of Emicho de Flonheim and his like, whom neither the emperor nor the bishops could stop. Kerpen belongs to that series of towns of which scarcely anything is known beyond the name and the date.
