Mayence was home to the largest community in the Empire. The Jews defended themselves with weapons in hand and killed their attackers before being overwhelmed; they then set fire to their quarter and perished in the flames.

The chronicle gives a figure that historians consider greatly exaggerated, as are most of those that medieval annalists put forward for these days. What is certain is that the mother community of Ashkenazi Judaism, that of Gershom "Light of the Exile" and the masters of the SHOuM, disappeared that day as a constituted body.
