In Erfurt, the Jewish quarter was attacked and set on fire. Before the assault, a resident buried beneath the wall of a house a chest containing silver coins, ingots, and Gothic goldsmith's jewelry, including a Jewish wedding ring.

This treasure was discovered during excavations at the end of the last century. It is today displayed in the city, beside the medieval synagogue — the oldest in Europe still standing, which had survived because it had been turned into a warehouse. Erfurt is thus one of the rare places where one can see what a destroyed community once possessed.
