At Worms, the community was burned. Several Jews set fire to their own homes to avoid falling alive into the hands of the assailants, as their ancestors had done two and a half centuries earlier during the First Crusade.

Worms was one of the three cities of the SHOuM, along with Spire and Mayence, which formed the heart of Rhenish Judaism and gave it its masters and its law. Its synagogue, its ritual bath, and its cemetery — the oldest in Europe still in place — survived these successive destructions.
