Au camp de Neuengamme, le médecin SS Kurt Heissmeyer conduisait des expériences sur la tuberculose : il inoculait des bacilles à des détenus, puis leur retirait des ganglions, pour démontrer une thèse que la science avait déjà écartée. Une vingtaine d'enfants juifs, garçons et filles, furent amenés d'Auschwitz pour ces essais, avec leurs accompagnateurs.

À l'approche des Britanniques, il fallut effacer la trace. Les enfants sont emmenés de nuit dans une école désaffectée de Hambourg, au Bullenhuser Damm, où le camp avait un kommando. On leur fait une piqûre de morphine, puis on les pend dans la cave, avec les hommes qui s'étaient occupés d'eux et des prisonniers soviétiques. Leur identité n'a pu être établie que des dizaines d'années plus tard, par un journaliste qui retrouva les familles ; Heissmeyer, lui, exerça la médecine sans être inquiété jusqu'à son arrestation tardive.
