Jewish houses forced, several days of rioting before military intervention
In Hamburg, Jewish homes were forced open and the rioting lasted several days before troops intervened.
The delay is significant. In most of the affected cities, the authorities hesitated: the rioters were neither foreigners nor marginal figures — they were craftsmen and shopkeepers from the city, and a portion of the notables shared their hostility toward emancipation. It is this hesitation, more than the violence itself, that struck Jewish observers of the time — and that would feed doubt about the solidity of the rights that had been gained.
