Jewish homes attacked in the Grand Duchy of Baden

Jewish homes are attacked in Karlsruhe, capital of the Grand Duchy of Baden, where the wave spreads as it does throughout the rest of southern Germany.

Baden was one of the states where the debate over emancipation had advanced the furthest, and where Jews had obtained the most rights. The riot there follows the same rule as everywhere else: it erupts where equality is progressing, not where it is denied. This is a reversal of the usual reading, and Jewish contemporaries noted it with unease.
