the Judengasse attacked, shops looted

The wave reached Frankfurt in the month of August. The Judengasse — the Jewish alley, where the community had been confined until recently — was attacked and shops were looted.

Frankfurt is the place where the stakes can be read most clearly: the city had granted rights under Napoleonic occupation and had revoked them after the Congress of Vienna, and the community was then pleading its case before the Germanic Diet. The riot was a street response to a legal dispute, and it targeted those who were demanding equality at the very moment they were demanding it.
