In Frankfurt, the Jewish quarter was burned down and the community annihilated. The Jewish quarter was located near the cathedral, at the heart of the city.

A new community reconstituted itself in the following decades, but this time confined to a narrow alley closed by gates, the Judengasse, where it lived enclosed for more than three centuries. This is one of the lasting consequences of the Black Death: wherever Jews returned, they returned under a stricter regime than the one they had known before.
