The community of Obernai was destroyed during the wave of the Black Death in Alsace.
Jews were again admitted there in the following decades, under revocable letters of residence, but the bourgeoisie remained closed to them until the Revolution.
The city was one of the ten allied cities of the Alsatian Décapole, and its council had taken part in the deliberations that preceded the massacres.
