Bishop Alduin of Limoges gave the Jews of his city the choice between baptism and departure, at the end of a month of public controversy conducted by the clergy. Ademar de Chabannes, writing on the spot, reports that some yielded and that the others went into exile.
The episode is set within the emotion stirred by news of the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre by Caliph al-Hakim, attributed in the West to a Jewish denunciation. Similar violence is reported the same year at several points in Aquitaine and the Rhineland: it is the first time that an event in the East triggers reprisals across the breadth of Latin Christendom.
