conversion or death imposed on the community, according to the chronicle of Jacob bar Yequtiel

The persecution that the Hebrew chronicle of Jacob bar Yequtiel places under Robert the Pious struck Rouen, where the community was ordered to choose between baptism and death. The account reports that mothers killed their children to spare them the baptismal font, and that Jacob bar Yequtiel went to Rome to plead the cause of his people before the pope.

The text, late and polemical, was long regarded with suspicion; historians today recognize in it the reflection of a real wave of violence, linked to the millenarian upheavals of those years and to news arriving from the East. Rouen was then the principal Jewish center of the kingdom, and its school's influence reached as far as the Rhineland.
