The crusaders of the Second Crusade attacked the community of Carentan, in Normandy. The Jews barricaded themselves in a house, defended themselves, and perished there.

Ephraïm de Bonn, who gathered the accounts of this crusade as the Rhenish chroniclers had done for the first, notes that the armed resistance at Carentan lasted longer than elsewhere. The preaching of Pierre le Vénérable and that of the monk Rodolphe had reopened in France and the Rhineland the violence that Bernard de Clairvaux was then endeavoring to contain.
