The four great synagogues of Frankfurt were burned the same night; the city was home to one of the oldest communities in Germany, established since the Middle Ages.

In Frankfurt, where the community was one of the largest and most learned in the country, synagogues are set on fire and shops looted during the night of violence. Men are arrested and sent to the Buchenwald camp. The city's library and centers of learning, renowned throughout Europe, are ransacked or shut down in the days that follow.
