the Jewry attacked, university students dispersing the crowd

In Heidelberg, the Jewish quarter is attacked, but the episode is distinguished by what brings it to a halt: students from the university disperse the crowd, two professors having led them.

The fact deserves to be noted because it goes against the current. Elsewhere, student circles are among the most hostile, and German nationalist associations provide a share of the rioters. Heidelberg shows that division runs through the same milieux, and that the outcome of a riot often depends on the presence, or absence, of a group determined to oppose it.
