Jewish houses and shops sacked, the community evacuated beyond the walls by troops

On the second day of August, in Würzburg, a university quarrel degenerates into a riot against the Jews of the city. Houses and shops are ransacked, and the community must be evacuated beyond the city walls by troops, who are unable to hold the streets.

This is the starting point of the riots known as the "Hep-Hep" riots, named after the cry the rioters shouted, whose origin remains disputed. They would spread within a few weeks across Germany and beyond. What triggers them is not a religious incident but a debate over emancipation: the question of whether Jews would become citizens like any other — and it is precisely this debate, not an ancient accusation, that drives the crowd into the streets.
