the community destroyed

Würzburg, destroyed half a century earlier by the Rintfleisch band, saw its reconstituted community annihilated a second time during the Black Death.

The city's medieval cemetery yielded, during excavations, more than a thousand stelae reused as building stones after the massacres. It is the largest collection of medieval Hebrew epitaphs known in Europe, and it owes its existence solely to the destruction of the community: the tombstones were saved because they had been plundered.
