Wurtzbourg was home to one of the most important communities in Franconia, heir to an ancient talmudic school. When the band of Rintfleisch reached the city, the populace joined it and the community was annihilated.

The names of the victims were inscribed in the Memorbuch of Nuremberg, that register in which the Rhenish communities recorded their dead so that they might be read in the synagogue on days of memory. It is through it, and not through the Christian chronicles, that the full extent of the summer of Rintfleisch is known: the stricken communities counted their own dead, city by city.
