the Jews sheltered in the imperial castle massacred

Nuremberg was an imperial city, and its Jews believed themselves safe: when the band approached, they took refuge in the imperial castle, which was the very seat of royal protection. The city's crowd stormed it and massacred them there.

The Memorbuch kept by the community bears the names of the dead from that day. It became, for all of Ashkenazi Judaism, the reference register of the Rintfleisch summer: the destroyed communities are listed one after another, and it is from Nuremberg that we know what happened elsewhere.
