Nuremberg, ville libre d'Empire, tenait sa communauté juive d'un privilège impérial et en tirait des contributions régulières. Le conseil obtint de Maximilien Iᵉʳ, contre une somme convenue, le droit de l'expulser — le décret fut pris au mois de juin et l'échéance fixée au printemps suivant.

Les Juifs partirent à la date dite, laissant leurs maisons du quartier situé autour de l'actuelle place du Marché. La synagogue fut abattue ; les pierres tombales du cimetière furent employées comme matériau de construction, et plusieurs se retrouvent aujourd'hui encore dans les murs de la ville. Le cimetière lui-même fut loti.

L'expulsion de Nuremberg est représentative du mouvement qui vida les villes libres d'Empire à la charnière des deux siècles : elle n'est pas précédée d'une émeute ni d'un procès, elle s'achète, elle se date, et elle se paie en argent comptant au souverain.
