It all began in Röttingen, a small town in Franconia, with an accusation of host desecration: Jews were said to have pierced a consecrated host, which had begun to bleed. An obscure knight by the name of Rintfleisch declared himself mandated by Heaven to punish this crime and had the community burned.

What could have remained a local act of violence became the first chain massacre in the history of German Judaism: Rintfleisch gathered a band, led it from town to town throughout the summer, and left behind him dozens of annihilated communities. The imperial vacuum — the Empire was then disputed between two kings — allowed the troop to act without being stopped.
