Massacres of Rintfleisch
1298·Weissenburg
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community destroyed
Weissenburg in Franconia lost its community during the passage of the Rintfleisch band. It appears in the Nuremberg Memorbuch among the destroyed localities.
The Memorbuch is a singular object: it says nothing of the perpetrators and everything of the victims. Each community is named, and beneath its name the list of its dead, intended to be read publicly. It was not written to serve as evidence but as prayer, and yet it is this book that preserved the Memory of that summer when the chronicles of the cities passed over it in silence.
