Forchheim, in Upper Franconia, saw its community destroyed during the Rintfleisch massacres, which moved up from the Main into northern Bavaria.

The bishopric of Bamberg, to which the town belonged, could not or would not oppose it. The wave of that summer spread far beyond the starting point of the rumor and continued for six months, sustained by word passing from village to village faster than the orders of any authority.
