the community destroyed

Windsheim, an imperial city of Franconia, lost its community in the summer of Rintfleisch. Its status as a free city, which placed it directly under the Emperor, afforded it no protection: the Empire was then disputed between Adolphe de Nassau and Albert de Habsbourg, and no one had either the means or the interest to stop the band.

Albert, once victorious, fined the cities that had stood by. The Jews were the property of the imperial chamber; to massacre them was therefore, in the eyes of the law, a violation of the sovereign's patrimony, not a crime against persons.
