the community destroyed

Mergentheim, seat of a commandery of the Teutonic Order, lost its community during the passage of the Rintfleisch band. It was struck again forty years later by the Armleder bands.

The presence of a military order made no difference: the authorities who might have defended the Jews — ecclesiastical lords or commanders — remained silent or arrived too late. The only effective recourse was the fine that the Emperor later imposed on a few guilty cities — a financial sanction, never a judicial one.
