the community destroyed

Heilbronn, on the Neckar, saw its community destroyed during the Rintfleisch massacres. The band, which had set out from Franconia, had by then crossed the boundaries of the region and was making its way into Swabia.

It is the geographical scope that sets this summer apart from earlier outbreaks of violence: it is no longer a single town rising up, but a troop that travels and makes the destruction of Jews its trade. This was something new in the Empire; it was repeated forty years later with Armleder, and then on a continental scale with the Black Death.
