A body was pulled from the Main, at Würzburg, and rumor attributed it to the Jews. This is one of the earliest known cases in the Empire where the discovery of a corpse served as a collective accusation — the pattern that the ritual murder accusation would fix for centuries.

Crusaders and townspeople attacked the community. The bishop had the remains of the victims collected and buried in his garden; he gave shelter to the survivors in his castles.

Ephraïm de Bonn, who was then about ten years old and lived in the Rhineland, recorded the episode in his *Livre du souvenir*, a collection of the persecutions of his time written so that they would be read on days of mourning. It is the principal source of everything known about the violence of the Second Crusade.
