Detainees evacuated from camps in the East are locked in a barn which is set on fire; those who attempt to escape are shot.

In the spring, columns of detainees evacuated from the camps of the East arrived in Saxe-Anhalt, where the front was approaching from both west and east. A thousand of them, blocked near Gardelegen, were locked inside an isolated barn at the edge of the town.

Straw soaked in petrol was set alight inside and the doors blocked; those who attempted to get out or to dig under the walls were shot. American troops arrived two days later and compelled the population of the town to bury the bodies and to tend the graves.
